Jane Sloman (1824-after 1850) was born in Ipswitch, England into a family of actors. She studied piano at a young age and was brought to the US in 1839. Her American debut was in New York in 1841 (at age 15), and subsequently travelled until ca. 1850 as one of the first female piano virtuosi to perform in the United States. Sloman was also an accomplished composer (one of the first group of women composers active in mid-century America), writing mostly in the smaller forms that were then available to women composers—songs, choral pieces, and piano compositions. Her most popular song was “Roll On, Silver Moon”;  she was also well known as editor of a vocal collection, The Melodist (1850). Sloman’s compositions (published after 1862 under the pseudonym Sloman Torry) continued to appear in the US until 1902.
