Daniel E. Kelley (1843-1905) is credited as the composer of the cowboy anthem “Home on the Range” (Kansas State song) which he wrote after moving from Rhode Island to Kansas in 1872. Before moving west, Kelley joined the army in 1863 and served as a bugler in the 3rd regiment, Rhode Island Cavalry. After mustering out, he followed his father’s career path making his living as a carpenter. In Kansas, he played violin with his brothers-in-law in the Harlan Brothers Orchestra, and in 1889 he moved to Waterloo, Iowa where he spent the rest of his days.
