Teresa Carreño (1853–1917) was a pianist from Venezuela whose family brought her to the United States, where, at age 10, she performed at the White House for Abraham Lincoln. After becoming an international touring sensation as an adult, she was the dedicatee of piano concertos written by two of the country’s most prominent composers, Amy Beach (1867–1944) of Boston and Edward MacDowell (1860–1908) of New York, signaling the high esteem in which her contemporaries held her artistry. In addition to performing, Carreño wrote dozens of pieces that were published widely, was married three times, and gave birth to six children.
